John Waddington, Ltd., Printers and Lithographers. ![]() How did you come up with something so modern looking for a play about something so old? When I first saw it I thought it was a science-fiction play.A novelty, the first in 20 years, Harry Houdini as a magician But by doing that you are finishing the sentence for people. A lot of times that happens because clients think you need to illustrate everything so that people know what they are getting. We’ve seen posters where they’ve got every character and it has every plot point hidden in the poster. ![]() That drives the aesthetic as well.Īll that really does force you to examine the poster closely.Ī poster should make you wonder and want to find out more. The poster’s hues - red, a dark brown-black and a bluish aqua - lend it a dangerous Steampunk-like quality. Houdini’s face, partially covered by a gas mask, peers out with an ominous intensity. Its most recent incarnation, which started performances in May, features an eye-catching poster with the title rendered in stylized oversized lettering. It was the first production at House Theater in Chicago in 2001, and has been revived a few times since. “Death & Harry Houdini” is a biographical show about the famed death-defying magician, featuring live magic and vaudeville-style music.
